Exploring the Deep South

America’s Deep South is a real melting pot of culture, cuisine, and laid-back living. The eclectic mix of nationalities that make up the states in the Deep South ensure that it offers everyone who visits an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for good ole’ Southern hospitality on a road trip, make sure you stop in at the following places along the way.

Atlanta

Birthplace of the American Civil Rights Movement and a city that shaped modern America, Atlanta is also home to legends like Bobby Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Elton John. Atlanta perfectly mixes classic with contemporary and the CNN Centre, and the Carter Presidential Centre are a must, as is enjoying Kentucky’s best whiskey and indulging in jambalaya and gumbo.

Nashville

The home of country music, Nashville has the Johnny Cash Museum, the Country Music Hall Of Fame and enough live venues and Honky Tonk bars to offer you a real taste of what living down South is all about. You can watch up and coming stars vie for a big break or hear music legends perform every night of the week. The food is good too, and you’ll find everything from crawfish to clam chowder to chicken waffles on the menu at the many local eateries that capitalise on this being the American capital of country music.

New Orleans

The birthplace of Jazz and the home of Voodoo, New Orleans is a sight to behold. Pay a visit to the famous Bourbon Street, explore the myriad of lanes that sprawl across this historic district and then soak up the sounds of saxophones while you indulge in Creole and Cajun cooking. History and intrigue abounds in New Orleans and a visit to the St Louis cemetery is a must, as is popping in at the St. Louis Cathedral.

Savannah

A spooky city with a rich history, Savannah, Georgia is on of America’ most haunted places, if not the most haunted of all! If you love spooky looking houses, graveyards that will give you goose bumps and old churches that have eerie presences, you need to pay Savannah a visit. From sublime nightlife to Mac n Cheese you’ll never forget, there’s a whole lot to enjoy here, even if you are not a fan of ghosts and would rather play the Bingo Australia has to offer than be scared out of your wits.

Memphis

Home to Elvis Presley and a whole lot more, Memphis is a hot and happening spot in the Deep South. There are music venues aplenty and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a must-visit. Of course no trip to Memphis is complete without popping in at Graceland and paying homage to the man who sang Blue Suede Shoes. You’ll go on a journey of discovery and Rock n Roll, and you’ll get to see a whole new side of Elvis too.
